  3. The Italian natural historian, philosopher and pioneer of empirical science, 
  4. Galileo Galilei (1564 - 1642) built his first telescope in 1609 following a new 
  5. design brought from Holland. 
  6.  
  7. With his telescope Galilei discovered the four biggest moons of Jupiter, which he described in great detail in his book 
  8. 'Sidereus Nuncius'. In addition he observed the phases of Mercury and Venus and discovered sunspots.

  10. Galilei was the first to discover the sunspots with the help of his telescopes. By  following the movement of these spots 
  11. Galilei could deduce that the Sun rotates around its axis in 27 days.
